HR software hub
One page to make sense of the HR software category — what it is, how it differs from ATS, HRIS, and payroll, and what to actually buy at every stage from your first hire to your fiftieth. Every guide below links back here.
Under 10 people: payroll (Gusto) + docs in a shared drive is enough. 10–50: add a real HRIS (BambooHR / Rippling) and a dedicated ATS (RecruitFlow) for hiring. 50+: full HCM starts to earn its keep. Everything on this hub answers a slice of that.

The HR software stack, by team size
1–10 people: Payroll (Gusto or Rippling) + a shared drive + a spreadsheet. Add an ATS the minute you're actively hiring more than one role — even RecruitFlow's free CSV imports are enough to start.
10–30 people: Add a real HRIS. BambooHR is the safe default; Rippling if you also want device management and app provisioning. Keep the ATS separate — HRIS-bundled hiring is universally too weak.
30–100 people: HRIS becomes non-negotiable. Consider whether you want payroll bundled (Rippling, Gusto) or on the side (ADP + BambooHR). Compliance surface grows fast — see HR compliance software.
100+ people: Full HCM (Workday, HiBob for the friendlier end). This is also where dedicated ATS ROI becomes obvious — enterprise HCMs' hiring modules cost more than a standalone ATS and do less.

Frequently asked questions
What is HR software?+
HR software is the umbrella term for the tools that manage employees after they're hired: records, payroll, PTO, benefits, performance, and compliance. When it also does hiring, it usually does it badly — pair it with a dedicated ATS.
What's the difference between HR software, HRIS, and HCM?+
HRIS is the record-keeping core (employees, PTO, docs). HR software is HRIS plus lighter workflows like reviews or engagement. HCM is HRIS + payroll + talent — the enterprise bundle. Small teams almost never need HCM.
Do I need HR software if I only have 3 employees?+
No. A payroll provider (Gusto, Rippling), a shared drive for docs, and a good spreadsheet is enough until ~10 employees. Add HR software when PTO tracking becomes a source of arguments.
How much does HR software cost for a small business?+
Per-employee pricing is the norm: $6–$12 per employee per month for the record-keeping tier, $12–$20 for full HRIS + performance, $30+ once payroll is bundled in.
What's the best HR software for a 20-person company?+
For under 30 employees, BambooHR, Gusto, or Rippling covers 90% of teams. See our full picks in the Best HR Software guide.
Should I buy HR software or an ATS first?+
Depends on your biggest pain. Payroll a mess? HRIS first. Candidates falling through the cracks? ATS first. Full breakdown in the HR software vs ATS guide.
